Removing Orphaned Users in a Sakai Site

If you Sakai course or project site is slow to load or cashes repeatedly, you most likely have orphaned users enrolled in that site. Orphaned users are users who were previously associated with W&J and had been assigned an Active Directory (and therefore Sakai) username but are no longer associated with the College and no longer has a W&J username. Users are not automatically deleted from Sakai because their records are maintained within the Sakai database.

You can easily identify these orphaned users because they are identified in Sakai with a set of hexadecimal such as the following example: 
35ce9984-b74d-4d35-836c-09b57773448a [unregistered] ( 35ce9984-b74d-4d35-836c-09b57773448a )       

To remove these orphaned users, follow the below steps:

1. Navigate to a site within Sakai and then click on the Site Info button in the left hand navigation pane.


2. From within the Site Info screen, place a check in the box under the Remove column for each orphaned user. Then click the Update Preferences button to remove them from your Sakai site.


You should periodically check any site for which you are an administrator (either Instructor of Manage access) and remove any orphaned users to ensure that the site will operate properly.
