What is a MAC Address?

Last Updated: Mar 27, 2018 09:40AM EDT

Problem

IT support sometimes asks for my MAC address, but I do not understand what that is.

Solution

The Media Access Control address, MAC, is a unique 12 character identifier that is assigned to a network interface (wired or wireless) by the manufacturer.  MAC addresses are also known as Ethernet Hardware Address (EHA,) hardware address or physical address.  MAC addresses are a combination of numbers from zero to nine and letters from A to F.  They are sometimes displayed in six sets of two, ex:  01:ab:23:cd:45:ef, but also three sets of four, ex:  01ab:23cd:45ef, can be presented.
